According to the IRS, it issues 90% of refunds in less than 21 days. To check the status of a refund online, use the “Where’s My Refund” tool at www.irs.gov or via the IRS2Go phone app. Taxpayers can begin checking the status of their return within 24 hours after the IRS received an e-filed return or four weeks after receipt of a mailed return. The status of refunds will be updated once a day, generally overnight. The IRS reminds taxpayers that there is no advantage to calling about refunds and if they need more information to process a tax return, contact will be made through the mail. More than four out of five tax returns are expected to be filed electronically and the same proportion of refunds will be direct deposit. IR 2016-10.
